The Los Angeles Dodgers hold a 29-16 record as of this story’s writing. As a result, LA has a comfortable 7.5 game lead in the National League West. The Dodgers are dealing with a number of injury concerns, however.

Star closer Evan Phillips was placed on the injured list in early May with a right hamstring strain. According to MLB.com, Phillips was expected to throw off a mound on Wednesday. It still is not clear exactly when he will return, but the Dodgers are hoping to have him back by the end of May at the very least.

Phillips was pitching at an All-Star level before suffering the injury. Through 14 games pitched, Phillips has recorded an eye-opening 0.66 ERA and 1.024 WHIP. Phillips, who is one of the best closers in the sport, also has eight saves.

Los Angeles is still winning games despite his absence. Regardless, Phillips’ return will provide further stability for the bullpen. The Dodgers feature more than enough talent to find success but they are even more lethal when the bullpen is fully intact.

More Dodgers injury updates

MLB.com also revealed that starting pitcher Bobby Miller is expected to return in late May or early June, while outfielder Jason Heyward could return within the next week or two.

Heyward, a veteran outfielder, recently began a rehab assignment as he works his way back from lower back tightness. He still offers production at the plate, however, Heyward has appeared in only four games in 2024.

Miller dodged a bullet after being diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation. Anytime a pitcher suffers a shoulder or elbow injury, fans immediately fear the worst. Fortunately, Miller, who has made three starts in 2024, is expected to return fairly soon.

With that being said, Los Angeles is not going to rush the young hurler. A setback is the last thing they want to happen. It would not be surprising to see Miller return later than expected as a result.

Of course, if he is clearly ready to go then the Dodgers would love to have him re-join the rotation as soon as possible. It will be a situation to closely monitor.

LA winning despite injuries

Injuries are never ideal, but this Dodgers ball club has more than enough depth to stay afloat. Shohei Ohtani has lived up to expectations hitting in the middle of the lineup, while LA’s other stars are impacting winning as well.

The Philadelphia Phillies have the best record in MLB with a mark of 31-13, however. Los Angeles was expected to compete with the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the sport during the ’24 campaign. Yet, it is Philadelphia who is currently in front of both teams.

The important note to make is that the Dodgers have performed at a high level despite multiple injury concerns. LA’s potential when fully healthy is something to keep in mind.

At the moment, the Dodgers will look to continue playing a quality brand of baseball. Los Angeles will host the Cincinnati Reds at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night.
