Mets Top Prospect Erupting In Minor Leagues; Could Promotion Be On Way?
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets may be in the middle of one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory but that doesn't mean the club doesn't have a bright future.

New York widely was considered among World Series contenders heading into the 2023 campaign but never was able to get on track and instead has struggled. The Mets' struggles surprised many and led the club to be arguably baseball's biggest seller ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline as the club traded away star pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

The Mets' trades of Scherzer and Verlander certainly negatively impacted the club's chances to win games this year, but greatly improved the club's farm system. One player who Mets fans certainly should be excited about is No. 2 prospect Drew Gilbert.

New York acquired the 22-year-old from the Houston Astros in the deal centered around Verlander and he has been red-hot in the Mets' farm system ever since. Gilbert was Houston's No. 1 prospect for a reason and in 29 games with the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies has slashed 317/.408/.508 to go along with 6 home runs, 19 RBIs, and a 159 wRC+.

Gilbert has been nothing short of exceptional since being acquired by the Mets and if he can continue to play at his current rate, could be in line for a promotion to the Triple-A Syracuse Mets in the not-so-distant future. The 22-year-old is projected to make the jump to the big leagues in 2025, but some time in Triple-A this season could make perfect sense. He likely will spend most of the 2024 campaign in Triple-A so maybe it makes sense to get a jump on it right now.

New York may be struggling right now, but some of these young prospects -- like Gilbert -- will be with the big league club shortly and should help turn things around.
