Offseason Acquisition May Not Pitch for LA This Season

J.P. Feyereisen, who the Dodgers added from the Tampa Bay Rays this offseason, might not throw a pitch for LA this season.

Feyereisen had a major shoulder surgery in the offseason and recently had a setback in his recovery. He has now slowed down his throwing program, thus decreasing the odds he returns to the mound in 2023.

"He's still in a good place long term," said General Manager Brandon Gomes. "We're just not going to ramp him up if he's just feeling so-so."

Feyereisen didn't allow a single run in his 22 appearances for the Rays in 2022. He held a 0.49 WHIP and a 5 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 24.1 innings — not a huge sample size but big enough to show very high potential for whenever he does return to the diamond.

Gomes wasn't ready to commit to counting Feyereisen out for the entire season, but the news certainly doesn't help the odds of a return.

"I don't know if we can 100 percent say that (he won't pitch this season). ... It's a little more of a 'wait-and-see' approach with JP," Gomes said.

The Dodgers could certainly use another reliable reliever in their bullpen. Their team bullpen ERA has improved since earlier in the season when it was among the worst in the league, but as the postseason creeps closer, the Dodgers will need every arm they have.
